We are a community organisation developing renewable energy projects for the benefit of future generations

We are aiming to create a more resilient, prosperous, and sustainable community by reducing Brampton’s carbon footprint in tackling climate change

Brampton and Beyond Energy.
Our current project is the development of a 500-kW anaerobic digester (AD) at Middle Farm, Brampton

Community Engagement

BABE aspires to be an organisation that is open and transparent at all times and responsive to local opinion. Community engagement lies at the heart of everything we do and BABE has created an email database to enable those with an interest to be kept informed. Regular announcements are made on Radio Cumbria and articles published in The Cumberland News. Occasional public events are organised to encourage discussion and gain feedback on results from studies and surveys. A BABE notice board in the Brampton Community Centre provides a useful source of information for those without access to the internet. There will continue to be a strong emphasis on community engagement throughout the life of the project to demonstrate that there is substantial support for specific renewable energy projects.

Anyone wishing to be added to the BABE support group mailing list is invited to contact us.

The Energy Plan

There are 5 parts to BABE’s long term energy plan:

  • The first part is to encourage the adoption of energy saving measures through insulation and energy saving.
  • The second part is to create a community led large scale renewable energy project for example an anaerobic digestion plant to provide a continuous supply of heat and power locally.
  • The third strand is to support the desire of householders to generate their own power at a domestic level.
  • The fourth element will be to form a local energy supply and distribution company within the next 5 years.
  • The final part of the energy plan will be to build on this foundation to enable the Brampton area to become a net exporter of electrical power over the next 20 years.

BABE's current priority is the development of the anaerobic digester at Middle Farm.

Raising Capital

To date the current project has been funded through the government’s Rural Community Energy Fund (RCEF) scheme. This will take the project to the point of being construction-ready with financing for the capital costs of construction arranged. The AD plant will cost about £3 million, a proportion of which will be raised through a community share issue. There will be a need to borrow the remainder of the capital from suitable lenders. Details of how we propose to raise the capital required will form part of the business plan that will be published in the share prospectus

About Us

Brampton and Beyond Energy Ltd (BABE) is a not-for-profit community benefit society. BABE’s main business aim is to build and operate an AD plant, generating income from the sale of electricity, heat and digestate, a proportion of which would be returned to the community.
